Known as the “King of Reggaeton” by music critics and fans alike, Daddy Yankee is also frequently cited as a pioneer of reggaeton by other Latino urban artists. In 2004, he garnered international notoriety with his hit single “Gasolina,” which is credited with introducing reggaeton to audiences worldwide and making the music genre a global phenomenon, cementing his status as one of the most successful Latin artists of the 2000s. Since then, he has sold nearly 30 million records, making him one of the best-selling Latin music artists. Daddy Yankee’s third studio album, “Barrio Fino,” made history when it became the best-selling Latin music album of the 2000s.
In 2017, Daddy Yankee, in collaboration with Latin pop singer Luis Fonsi, released the hit single “Despacito,” which became the first Spanish-language song to reach number one on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart since 1996. The single was a worldwide success and “Despacito” became the most-viewed video on YouTube and the best-selling single of the 2010 decade. His success led him to become the most-listened-to artist worldwide on Spotify in June 2017, the first Latin artist to do so. In 2019, his single “Con Calma,” featuring Canadian reggae musician Snow, earned the Best Latin Song of 2019 and reached the top 10 of the most-listened-to songs worldwide. It was his most-viewed video on YouTube, generating more than 2.4 billion views. Daddy Yankee has also won 102 awards, earned more than 310 nominations, and was named one of the “most influential Hispanics” by Time magazine and CNN. In mid-December, one of his biggest dreams, to record together with Marc Anthony, became a reality when they collaborated on his favorite Christmas song, “De Vuelta Pa’ La Vuelta.” With 300 million views, the song reached number one on Billboard’s Tropical Airplay chart and debuted at number five on the Hot Latin Songs chart. Daddy Yankee released “Problema,” his first song of 2021, which surpassed one billion views since its release. He performed “Problema” on the ABC Network from the city of Miami on Jimmy Kimmel Live! and the following day on Good Morning America. Additionally, he was awarded Songwriter of the Year for the third time at the 2021 American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) Latin Music Awards and was recently inducted into the Billboard Hall of Fame becoming the first Latin urban artist Hall of Famer.
