Destination Vero Beach for an Action Packed Guy's Getaway

Post spring break season and prior to summer school break is the perfect time for a guy's time out in Vero Beach, FL.

The destination caters to everyone from daredevils to baseball history buffs, from avid golfers to fishing fanatics. Throw in an array of sports bars; excellent, eclectic dining; a few award-winning craft breweries; and some upscale nightlife, and you have the makings of a memorable men’s excursion. Oops, almost forgot: beaches and lots of sun.
Here's what's on hand:

A Swinging Time
Nearly two-dozen golf courses are clustered around Vero Beach, a few of which are situated on the barrier island and provide terrific ocean views. Some are members-only, some are affiliated with resorts, some are public, all are well kept and scenic. The best options for easy access golf are: Sebastian Municipal Golf Course [http://www.sebastiangolfcourse.org/], which has spent $2 million on improvements in the last two years; Sandridge Golf Club [http://www.sandridgegc.com/]; and Vista Plantation Golf Club [https://www.myvistagolf.com/].

Surf’s Up
The waters off Vero Beach present some of the best surfing in Florida, and offer the ideal getaway for a group of wave-ridin’ pals. You can find spots appropriate for beginners, and at least one place that rip-curl fanatics give “mythic status.” Drop in at milder spots like Humiston Park, Jaycee Park and Wabasso Beach Park. They’re all within eight miles of each other on the barrier island. If you want a serious challenge, head a few clicks north to the Monster Hole at Sebastian Inlet. Florida Surf Museum says this break is “where the reality and the hype come together.” Surfing is seasonal, with summer not providing much. If you don’t surf, grab a spot on the sand and spectate.

Free Fall
Skydive Sebastian’s planes fly far above the Atlantic, affording their passengers a chance to drop into Florida's eastern edge near the picturesque swimming cove of Sebastian Inlet. The company's hangar and flock of professional skydivers—some of whom boast more than 16,000 jumps––await flights at a 7-acre facility, where they host first-time tandem skydivers and operate a skydiving school for beginners interested in learning to skydive on their own through the Accelerated Freefall course. Meanwhile, experienced skydivers with a passion for the sport of skydiving can receive independent coaching to keep free-fall skills sharp. www.skydiveseb.com

Hops to It
What better place for a guys’ hang than a craft brewery tasting room? Our destination offers three great ones in different parts of Indian River County.
• Orchid Island Brewery — A block from the ocean on the barrier island, this classy place features citrusy brews using certified local fruit, plus farm-to-table eats. http://orchidislandbrewery.com/
• Pareidolia Brewing — Sebastian’s first and only nano-brewery (three-barrel brewhouse) specializes in handcrafted, small batch ales. http://www.pareidoliabeer.com/welcome#home
• Walking Tree Brewery — Located a few miles inland, this big industrial-looking place creates a large selection of unique brews, from staples to exotic concoctions. https://www.walkingtreebrewery.com/

Historic Dodgertown
Founded in 1948, the former WWII Naval Air Station was the home of Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodger Spring Training until 2008. Today, it’s a top-tier training site for a variety of sports and teams. Holman Stadium, where the Dodgers played their Grapefruit League games, hosts all manner of sporting events. Historic Dodgertown also features on-site housing and dining.http://historicdodgertown.com/

Get Hooked
By any measure, Vero Beach/Indian River County is an angler’s mecca, but let us recommend Farm 13/Stick Marsh Reservoir, which boats a reputation as one of the most bountiful and beautiful bass lakes in Florida. This 6,700-acre reservoir offers unsurpassed catch-and-release.

Locked and Loaded
If your party hankers for the report of a rifle or pistol, or the whoosh of arrows, government-owned Indian River County Shooting Range provides a wide array of safety-first facilities in a controlled sporting environment. It has 35 pistol stations and 29 rifle stations, with various target ranges. There’s a five-stand sporting clay range, an archery range and air rifle and pellet gun target facility. Bang bang ‘til your trigger finger taps out. https://www.facebook.com/goshootingIRC/
