R School Orlando Now Accepting Enrollment Applications for Spring Term
First-of-its-kind educational alternative is designed to meet students where they “are”
R School, a new Florida nonprofit independent school designed to meet students where they “are,” is now accepting applications for the spring term. The first of its kind in Central Florida, R School delivers an adaptable, accessible educational alternative to public, private, and home school environments.
R School offers flexible enrollment options for Central Florida students in grades K-8:
- Full-time, campus-based independent school
- Part-time, campus-based homeschool or private school enrollment
- Private school umbrella enrollment
The R School flexible enrollment plan allows families to choose the option that best fits their needs.
“In contrast to learning environments that emphasize high-stakes standardized testing and adherence to fixed curriculum, R School offers a child-centered approach to education that allows students and families to be active participants in the learning experience,” said R School Founder and President Meribeth Huebner, who is an Associate Dean at Rollins College. “While grounded in traditional academics, R School’s curriculum is designed around each child’s curiosity and learning style. Students learn in small, multi-age classes guided by education professionals and content specialists.”
In addition to traditional academic curriculum, including language arts, social studies, science, and math, students participate in a rotating number of electives taught by specialists, including gardening/environmental studies; drumming; Spanish/culture; yoga/mindfulness; and creativity/design thinking. Frequent field trips to nearby farms, nature preserves and other venues enhance R School’s non-traditional learning educational experience.
“My son looks forward to his day learning at R School, where he feels valued and respected by the teachers who give the children autonomy and who have created a culture of trust,” said Heather Reneau, the parent of a 6th grader enrolled at the school. “The teachers are amazing, the hands-on projects are interesting, and the environment is nurturing. The small group learning experience is exactly what my son needed to thrive.”
R School also provides supporting educational resources through strategic partnerships, tutoring, and community learning opportunities. The nonprofit launched two Florida locations last August for the 2016 to 2017 school year. R School’s East Orlando location is located at St. Matthew’s Episcopal Church. The second campus serving K-5 students is located in Lakeland under the directorship of Dr. Wendy Bradshaw.
“R School is an independent-minded, community-spirited solution for parents who seek to provide the highest quality education for their children in a progressive, pioneering environment,” added Darren McDaniel, Vice-President and Creative Director for R School and founding director of Urban ReThink, a community hub for stimulating collaborative endeavors, economic growth, lifelong learning, and community evolution.
