As Cuba enters a new era following its restored diplomatic ties with the United States, Nat Geo Mundo takes viewers on an intimate journey through the Cuba of today (LA CUBA DE HOY), as seen through the eyes of Cuban-American, Mireya Mayor. As an anthropologist and conservationist, passionate about discovering her roots, Mayor provides an in-depth look at the effects of Cuba’s re-established relations with the U.S. on commerce, culture and lifestyle, speaking to native Cubans while providing personal narratives during her travels.

December 17^th, 2014 was a historic day for both the U.S. and Cuba when Raúl Castro and President Obama announced a new vision for the country, restoring diplomatic ties for the first time in more than 50 years.  Fast forward two years and change is very readily seen in Cuba, impacting many aspects of daily life on the island, as well as those now able to more freely visit. Industries previously struggling or merely nonexistent, such as Airbnb and cruising, are now flourishing due to the influx of tourists. Mayor examines the evolving nation and the impact on its people through interviews with the locals of Havana, sharing personal accounts of the country’s progression, thoughts on this new beginning and hope for the future. 

LA CUBA DE HOY is comprised of two hour-long episodes - “A Puertas Abiertas” premiering on Nat Geo Mundo Sunday, October 2 at 8PM ET/PT and “Un Nuevo Son” set to air Sunday, October 9 at 8PM ET/PT.  

“A Puertas Abiertas” (“Embracing Change”) follows Mayor as she steps foot onto Cuban soil for the first time, joined by her husband and children. Like many Cuban-Americans whose ability to visit the island has been inhibited over the years, Mayor visits the historic monuments including Hotel National, an architectural symbol of Havana, and local restaurants, who must now adapt their size and cuisine to accommodate the increase in visitors. With the largest impact placed on commercial progress, Mayor uncovers everything from important financial and technological enhancements, like the expansion of Wi-Fi, still very limited on the island, to credit cards which are still not accepted in many establishments. 

“Un Nuevo Son” (“A New Rhythm”) explores the impact of restored U.S. relations as it relates to religion, art and everyday culture, which many are striving to preserve. Personal narratives of the Cuban people demonstrate the influence of recent visits from important members of society, particularly Pope Francis whose arrival helped reinstate a sense of faith which, according to some Cubans, was absent during the revolution. Mayor and her daughter meet famed Cuban ballet dancer, Alicia Alonso, and explore authentic architecture and art on the island, while Cuban artists, such as Willy Chirino, reveal their stories and the impact Cuba has had on their careers, even when migrating to the U.S.  

While this era marks a new beginning and bright future for Cuba, conservation is still top of mind for many who are seeing the rapid changes impact their everyday lives. Through LA CUBA DE HOY, Nat Geo Mundo offers a personal, unseen glimpse of the return to one’s homeland following the evolution of a culture, efforts to preserve an essence cherished by many, and age-old traditions that may never change.   

LA CUBA DE HOY headlines Hispanic Heritage Month programming set to air on Nat Geo Mundo throughout September and October. The month-long programming line-up will kick off with the return of Poncho Herrera in a new season of CIENCIA DE LO ABSURDO premiering with back-to-back episodes Saturday, September 9^th at 8PM and 8:30PM ET/PT. Seis Consejos para estar Simplemente Saludables 

Como madres siempre anteponemos las necesidades de nuestra familia antes que a nosotras. Sin embargo, es muy importante recordar que para cuidar de nuestros seres queridos tenemos que dedicar aunque sea quince minutos diarios para nuestro bienestar. Es por eso que te quiero compartir los siguientes consejos de yoga para reactivar tu energía y mantener una vida simplemente saludable. 

1. Perfecciona tu respiración. Comienza inhalando lentamente por la nariz y exhálalo lentamente por tu boca; saca todo le aire de tus pulmones. Inhala paz y exhala el estrés, para ayudar a reparar diariamente tus pensamientos y poner en balanza tus emociones. 

2. Empieza con la posición de lotto para fortalecer tus articulaciones, incrementar la circulación y ayudarte a estar enfocada. Tu flexibilidad ira aumentando, puedes empezar con un pie sobre el muslo opuesto, y cuando te sientas lo suficientemente cómoda pon ambos pies sobre tus muslos. 

3. Cambia a la postura de la vaca y gato para calentar tu columna, aliviar la tensión en tu cuello y espalda, mientras mejoras tu postura. Pon tus manos y rodillas en el piso, respirando profundamente. Mientras exhalas, flexiona tu columna hacia el techo y contrae tu abdomen. Al inhalar, arquea tu espalda y d relaja tu estómago. Repite según veas necesario. 

4. Pasa a la posición del perro boca abajo. Esta postura es una inversión sencilla que ayuda a desarrollar resistencia mientras estiras tu cuerpo. También puede ayudar a mejorar la digestión, aliviar el dolor de espalda e incrementar tu nivel de energía. 

5. Para finalizar, mueve tu cuerpo a la postura del niño, arrodillándote en el piso. Descansa tus glúteos en tus talones. Exhalación e inclina tu cuerpo hacia adelante, envolviendo tu torso entre tus muslos. Deja que tu frente toque el piso y extiende tus brazos enfrente de ti. 

6. Regresa a la postura del lotto y toma unos segundos para reflexionar sobre todo lo que te hace sonreír. Nada ayuda tu salud más que un corazón lleno de gratitud y felicidad.

Tampa’s majestic movie palace will celebrate its 90^th birthday on Saturday, Oct. 15 with four screenings of films chosen for the ways in which each pays tribute to the art of cinema. The titles span an impressive eight decades of filmmaking, and include a silent film with live accompaniment on Tampa Theatre’s original Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ – an homage to the Theatre’s early days as a silent film house. And as a nod to the Theatre’s opening night in 1926, tickets for the Oct. 15 shows are just a quarter – a dollar for the whole day – and will be available cash only, day-of, at the historic Franklin Street Box Office.

HUGO (2011) l 11:45am

Hugo is an unusual movie, straddling the worlds of both “art cinema” and technical showpiece. It won many awards for cinematography, as well as visual and sound design. Even its 3D version was widely lauded for using the technology in service of the storytelling, rather than simply for flash. And it was made by acclaimed director Martin Scorsese, who’s not typically known for putting effects in the foreground of his work. At the same time, it works as both fictional adventure story and historical remembrance; Hugo mainly concerns itself with the namesake (fictional) main character, an orphaned boy living on his own in a railway station and trying to avoid notice by the authorities, but Hugo’s fate is tied up with that of a toymaker who also happens to be Georges Méliès, a real-life French film pioneer and visionary director. Hugo’s search for a connection with his father leads into the world’s search for the lost Méliès, who has disappeared from public life. It’s a magical tale that is itself about the way movies can be both emotionally and literally magical. But it also takes true joy in the victories of a little boy who misses his dad and refuses to give up hope.  2h 6m / Rated PG / Family-Adventure

THE ARTIST (2011) l 3:15pm

All of the films selected for our 90th birthday celebration are, in one way or another, love letters to the art of cinema. But none of them is as straightforward in its adoration as The Artist, the 2011 Best Picture winner, in the style of silent film. Perhaps that’s because it’s easier to look back in love the more distance you have on the subject. The Artist sets its story at a time of great change in the movie business: George Valentin (Jean Dujardin), a silent film idol, finds himself falling in love with a young starlet (Bérénice Bejo) who happens to be the new, fresh face of a burgeoning movie technology — “talkies.” George’s career is being choked out by the rise of sound, but his love for Poppy might save him, if he’ll let it. The timeline coincides with a time of great change in society in general as well: Sound films come on in the late 1920s, right as the Great Depression is beginning. But The Artist seeks to affirm a lesson everyone learns, if they’re lucky enough to last as long as cinema has: you have to be open to change and you have to adapt to what’s new, or the world will pass you by. Tampa Theatre strives to be as vital and necessary a Tampa Bay cultural institution in 2016 as we were in 1926. And constantly working to make that happen is the most fulfilling job those of us here can imagine.  1h 40m / Rated PG-13 / Comedy

THE CAMERAMAN (1928) l 7:00pm

Buster Keaton wasn’t the first silent film comedian, but he was certainly among the best of them, and The Cameraman showcases him at the peak of the form. The story of the movie runs as so many Keaton comedies do: he stars as a working-man type, earnest if a bit inept, trying his best while set upon by his bosses, the authorities, and unbelievable circumstances beyond any control. He yearns for a pretty, young woman of his acquaintance, who repeatedly either doesn’t notice him or turns him down flat. But the story isn’t why you come see a Buster Keaton movie, and it won’t be why you find yourself unable to blink. Keaton’s balletic physical performance, his flawless comic timing and his deadpan facial expressions are as good as they’ve ever been in The Cameraman. This is a late-period Keaton film — in less than a year, MGM would take creative control away from him (Keaton was often director and writer on his own movies, whether credited or not) and his star never quite rose to such heights again. But maybe that’s appropriate. At his most brilliant, Buster Keaton’s performances are anxious, kinetic, serendipitous; each take feels like a one-in-a-million shot. His career was one-in-a-million, too. 

Dr. Steven Ball will join us from Atlantic City, NJ – where he is the Director of Outreach for “the largest musical instrument on earth,” Boardwalk Hall’s massive pipe organ – to accompany this silent classic with an original score of his own composition, written to showcase Tampa Theatre’s original Mighty Wurlitzer Theatre Organ.  1h 9m / Not Rated / Silent Comedy

CINEMA PARADISO (1988) l 10:10pm

Whatever you love changes your life. It can put you on a path, lead you into relationships, expand your consciousness. And it can teach you lessons about yourself. Cinema Paradiso, winner of the 1989 Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, is a movie about loving movies. That’s why we’ve included it among our special presentations for our 90th birthday (well, that and it’s our CEO’s favorite film). But it’s also a movie about love itself, and how love shapes a person’s life. Salvatore (Jacques Perrin) is drawn to the movies out of excitement — they’re larger-than-life, and they show him the world in a way that his day-to-day existence in Sicily as a boy never could. By the time we see him in adulthood, cinema is his primary way of interacting with the world. He’s a projectionist and filmmaker, and his mentor advises him through movie quotes. But love is one of the things he can’t learn from the movies. And his love for film eventually forces a decision: will he leave the world of his childhood to follow his dreams? Dr Phillips Center for the Performing Arts announces the four local area elementary schools that have been selected to participate in the inaugural Disney Musicals in Schools program.

DISNEY MUSICALS IN SCHOOLS PROGRAM

SELECTS LOCAL ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS FOR PARTICIPATION

Dr. Phillips Center Florida Hospital School of the Arts announces the four local area elementary schools that have been selected to participate in the inaugural Disney Musicals in Schools program. Participating in the 2016 – 2017 school year are Bonneville Elementary (Orange County), Winegard Elementary (Orange County), Lake Orienta Elementary (Seminole County) and Kissimmee Elementary (Osceola County). At an Orientation event in January 2017, these schools will select the a Disney musical of their choice from the “KIDS” licensing collection. The rehearsals will officially start in January 2017, culminating with performances the following May.

At no cost to them, these selected schools will participate in a 17-week musical theater residency, led by a team of teaching artists trained by the School of the Arts and Disney Theatrical Group. Each school will receive performance rights, educational support materials and guidance from the teaching artists. The program features a professional development focus, through which participating school teachers partner with School of the Arts teaching artists to learn how to produce, direct, choreograph, and music direct their first school show.  The program will culminate in a 30-minute Disney KIDS musical at each school site.  As a capstone to the experience, the School of the Arts will host a Student Share Celebration in which each school performs one number from their show on the Dr. Phillips Center stage for an audience of students, teachers, family and community members.

$100,000 grant from Disney was awarded for the Dr. Phillips Center Florida Hospital School of the Arts in May of this year. The grant affords the outreach initiative developed by Disney Theatrical Group to create sustainable theater programs in under-resourced elementary schools.  The grant funds two years of programming. Another four schools will be selected for 2017-2018 school year.

Using the unique world of musical theater, Disney Musicals in Schools helps to foster positive relationships between students, faculty, staff, parents and the community.  Students and teachers work in teams, developing the wide spectrum of skills needed when producing a piece of musical theater, including: critical thinking, problem solving, ensemble building, communication, self-confidence and interpersonal skills.

Ensalada de Quinua con Aderezo de Ají Amarillo

La quinua es un alimento básico en Perú y con buena razón. Es una de las pocas semillas que tiene un equilibrio excepcional entre el aceite, proteínas y grasas. Mezclada con ají amarillo, jugo de limón verde y el cilantro, esta sabrosa ensalada añadirá una explosión de sabor, así como una gran cantidad de nutrientes. El sabor suave del aceite de canola mantiene los demás sabores frescos y brillantes.

Ingredientes:

1 taza de quinua 250 mL

2 tazas de caldo de verduras (vegetales) 500 mL

Aderezo:

1/4 taza de aceite de canola 60 mL

1 cda. de pasta de ají amarillo (u otro chile de sabor poco picante) 15 ml

1 taza de hojas enteras de cilantro 250 mL

1/4 taza de jugo de limón verde (lima) 60 mL

1 cdta. de sal 5 mL

Ensalada:

1 taza de chícharos (arvejas o guisantes) frescos o congelados 250 mL

1 lata de 15-oz de frijoles cannellini, escurridos y enjuagados (425 g)

1/2 taza de apio picado 125 mL

1/2 taza de cebolla morada, bien picada 125 mL

Instrucciones:

1. Enjuaga bien la quinua bajo agua fría en un colador de malla fina o bajo varios cambios de agua. Escúrrela bien. En una olla grande, hierve el caldo y la quinua a fuego medio. Reduce el fuego y mantén un hervor suave y cocina la quinua hasta que esté tierna pero todavía firme al morder, unos 15 minutos. Estará lista cuando el germen se despegue dejándola parecer una Q rizada. Escúrrela bien y devuelve la quinua a la olla retirada del fuego. Cúbrela con una toalla y vuelve a ponerle la tapa, permitiendo que se cocine al vapor y quede suelta y esponjosa al enfriarse.

2. Para el aderezo: Añade todos los ingredientes a un procesador de alimentos y mezcla hasta obtener una consistencia homogénea.

3. Si usas chícharos frescos, hierve agua en una olla mediana a fuego alto. Añade los chícharos y cocínalos 5 minutos. Cuélalos y enjuágalos con agua fría. Si usas los congelados, salta este paso.

4. En un tazón grande para mezclar, combina la quinua fría, los chícharos, los frijoles, el apio, la cebolla morada y el aderezo. Mezcla todo hasta que la ensalada se recubra bien con el aderezo. Puedes preparar esta ensalada con un día de anticipación.

Trucha Asada con Salsa de Aguacate y Mango

Esta es una receta básica para asar pescado – rápida, fácil y simple. La salsa está hecha con aceite de canola porque su sabor neutro no domina los sabores naturales y vibrantes del mango y el aguacate. También puedes usar la salsa como un dip o para añadir un toque de sabor a otros platos fuertes. Este pescado es fabuloso con frijoles negros o arroz integral.

Ingredientes:

Trucha:

4 (5-oz/140 g) de filetes de trucha

aceite de canola en aerosol

jugo de 1 limón amarillo (unas 3 cdas./45 mL)

1 cda. de aceite de canola 15 mL

½ cdta. de sal 2 mL

¼ cdta. de pimienta negra molida 1 mL

2 limones amarillos, enteros

Salsa:

1 mango, pelado y cortado en cubos de 1/2 pulgada (1 cm)

1 aguacate (palta) mediano, pelado y cortado en cubos de 1/2 pulgada (1 cm)

½ taza de cebolla morada, bien picada

1 cda. de jugo de limón verde (lima) 15 ml

1 cda. de aceite de canola 15 ml

1 cdta. de chile en polvo 5 mL

2 cdas. de cilantro, picado 30 mL

½ cdta. de sal 2 mL

Instrucciones:

Para la trucha:

1.  Precalienta el horno a 375° F (190° C).

2.  Rocía un molde o charola (bandeja) para asar de 9 x 9 pulgadas (22 x 22 cm) con el aceite de canola en aerosol. Coloca los filetes en el molde y recúbrelos con el jugo de limón, el aceite de canola, la sal y la pimienta.

3.  Rebana los limones enteros en ruedas finas y sácales las semillas. Distribuye las ruedas de forma pareja sobre los filetes de trucha.

4.  Asa el pescado de 15 a 20 minutos, dependiendo del grosor de los filetes. El pescado debe de quedar translúcido (claro) y se desmenuce fácilmente al separarse la carne.

Para la salsa:

1.  Coloca el mango, el aguacate, la cebolla, el jugo de limón verde, el aceite de canola, el chile en polvo, el cilantro y la sal en un tazón de medir pequeño y mezcla todo bien. Puedes guardar la salsa en el refrigerador de dos a tres días.

El Blu-ray Combo Pack y el Digital HD de Nerve le brindan la oportunidad a los televidentes de meterse en la piel del OBSERVADOR o del JUGADOR. Con el lanzamiento de los materiales especiales, el televidente elige entre el modo de OBSERVADOR o de JUGADOR. Como OBSERVADOR, se accede a las escenas detrás de las cámaras con 15 cortos de “Creating Nerve” que exploran cómo se hizo la película, las tomas descartadas de “The Fat Jewish Gets Tattewish” que muestran a Josh Ostrovsky (conocido como la personalidad digital ‘The Fat Jewish’) en la tienda de tatuajes, y “The Governor’s Ball Takeover”, una crónica de cómo se desarrolla el atrevido juego en el “Governor’s Ball” en Nueva York en 2016.   

Además, los televidentes con sed de suspense pueden activar el modo de JUGADOR interactivo a través del test interactivo “Are You a Watcher or a Player”. Para los televidentes que busquen una inyección de adrenalina y los perfiles de los seis jugadores principales de Nerve, estará disponible el juego “Do You Have the Nerve?”. El Blu-ray de Nerve también incluye pistas de audio inmersivas DTS:X, que recrean y transmiten el sonido generado por un movimiento fluido. Emma Roberts (de la serie televisiva “Scream Queens”) y Dave Franco (de la franquicia Now You See Me) protagonizan Nerve, un thriller romántico cargado de suspense dirigido a la generación de ‘millenials’, que desembarcará en Digital HD el 11 de octubre, y en Blu-ray Combo Pack (más DVD y Digital HD), DVD (más Digital) y en On Demand el 25 de octubre, de la mano de Lionsgate. Vee (Emma Roberts) es una estudiante aplicada de último año de secundaria que está cansada de llevar una vida aburrida.
